Neuro Linguistic Programming's Swish Pattern

The swish pattern is a form of visual anchoring, which attaches a positive dissociated image to a visual trigger, is one of the key NLP techniques we teach in our NLP Practitioner Training here in New York

To do a successful NLP swish we need the following elements:

  • Identify the visual trigger that immediately precedes the behavior
  • Develop a powerful dissociated image of how you want to be after you have made the change in your life
  • Find a driving visual submodality that can be used to swish or switch the images

The NLP Swish Technique

The first step we teach in our New York NLP Practitioner training is to decide what you want to change. Let's say you want to stop smoking. When do you smoke? Is it at work? At home? In your car? In the bar with your friends? Make a note of the times that you usually smoke as we will have to deal with each separately.

In each of these situations, how did you know it was time for you to smoke? What did you seen that told you it was time, maybe your hand reaching for the pack, or maybe there was something before that. This will be the first picture in the swish.

Suppose you have stopped smoking, now, what kind of person are you as a non smoker? Consider this carefully. Maybe you are powerful, in control, maybe you are healthy, the sort of person who cares for themselves.when you have answered this question form a picture of yourself as you look with these attributes, that's right. This will be the second picture of the swish.

Now, bring the picture closer, does this make it more attractive, if so keep it there, if not move it back, now try making it bigger. Go through the rest of the NLP sub-modalities, until you have found at least two that significantly increase the feelings associated with the positive picture. There are called driving submodalities. Let us say it is size that drives the feelings most.

Now see what you see immediately before you used to want to smoke. Somewhere in that picture see a small picture of the you as you are when you have conquered this habit, now.

Quickly make the large picture (for example your hand reaching for the cigarette) shrink down to a dot as the small picture (the powerful you who is in control and healthy) grows to fill the space.

Blank the screen. Once more see the large picture of you reaching for the cigartette with the small picture of the you you want to be hidden in the picture. Again make the big picture small and grow the small picture to fill the gap. Blank the screen. Start again.

Run the pattern a few more times. Now think of the picture of your hand reaching for the cigarette and notice how it's different now.
